QR code error correction levels explained

Error correction determines how much of a QR code can be damaged or obscured while still scanning correctly. Higher levels add more redundant data, making the code larger but more reliable:

  • Low (7%): Smallest QR code, best for digital screens where no damage is expected
  • Medium (15%): Good balance โ€” recommended for most print uses
  • Quartile (25%): Better for outdoor use or codes that may get scratched
  • High (30%): Maximum resilience โ€” best for industrial labels, clothing, or any rough surface

Frequently Asked Questions

Do Gaugeify QR codes expire?
Never. Our QR codes are static โ€” the encoded data is embedded directly in the image file. There are no servers tracking scans, no subscriptions required, and the codes work forever as long as the destination URL remains active.
What size QR code should I print?
The minimum printable size is about 2cm ร— 2cm (0.8 inches). For business cards, 2.5cm works well. For posters and signage visible from a distance, use at least 5โ€“10cm. A general rule: the scanning distance should be no more than 10ร— the QR code size.
Can I add a logo to the center of the QR code?
Yes, but with caution. A logo in the center relies on error correction to recover the obscured data. Use "High" error correction mode before adding a logo, and keep the logo under 30% of the total QR code area. Test scanning from multiple devices before printing at scale.
