How Roman Numerals Work
Roman numerals use seven letters, each representing a value. Numbers are formed by combining these symbols following two rules: values are generally written largest to smallest left to right, and a smaller value placed before a larger value is subtracted.
I = 1, V = 5, X = 10, L = 50, C = 100, D = 500, M = 1000
Additive rule: VIII = 5+1+1+1 = 8
Subtractive rule: IV = 5โ1 = 4, IX = 10โ1 = 9, XL = 50โ10 = 40, XC = 100โ10 = 90, CD = 500โ100 = 400, CM = 1000โ100 = 900
The subtractive rule only applies to specific combinations โ never VC, LC, or DM, for example. Only the six combinations above (IV, IX, XL, XC, CD, CM) use subtraction.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the largest Roman numeral?
The traditional Roman numeral system goes up to 3,999 (MMMCMXCIX). Numbers 4,000 and above require a bar over a numeral (called vinculum) to multiply by 1,000, but this is rarely used. Our converter covers 1โ3,999.
Why don't Roman numerals have a zero?
The Romans didn't need zero for their purposes โ counting and trading. The concept of zero as a number was developed independently by Babylonian, Indian, and Mayan mathematicians. The Roman numeral system predates the widespread use of zero in Europe, which came through Arabic mathematics in the Middle Ages.
What year is MCMXCIX?
MCMXCIX = 1999. M=1000, CM=900, XC=90, IX=9. Total: 1000+900+90+9 = 1999. This is one of the most complex Roman numeral expressions for a recent year.
