Understanding PayPal Fees for Sellers

PayPal's fee structure has changed significantly in recent years. The standard 2.9% + $0.30 rate that many sellers memorized was replaced in 2023 with a tiered system. The most common rate for small and medium sellers is now 3.49% + $0.49 for standard checkout — which is 59 cents more than the old rate per transaction, adding up quickly at volume.

⚠️ Never use Friends & Family for business

PayPal's Goods & Services option provides buyer and seller protection. Friends & Family offers neither. Asking customers to use F&F to avoid fees is against PayPal's Terms of Service and can result in account suspension. The fee is a cost of doing business — price it in.

Is Stripe cheaper than PayPal?
Stripe's standard rate is 2.9% + $0.30 — lower than PayPal's current 3.49% + $0.49 for most transaction types. On a $100 transaction: Stripe = $3.20, PayPal Standard = $3.98. Over 1,000 transactions at $100 each, Stripe saves $780. For high-volume sellers, Stripe's lower rate is significant. PayPal still has advantages: broader consumer trust, PayPal Credit financing for buyers, and wider international coverage.
